Shanghai Family Restaurant

Hi! This is our first post of restaurant reviews, but there will be many more to come =)

Today, we tried a new restaurant that was highly rated on yelp. Shanghai Family Restaurant on Rengstorff in Mountain View is a mom-and-pop shop that serves authentic Shanghai-style Chinese food. Although it is located in a random strip mall, the restaurant is clean and cozy.

Tyler felt a little out of place as we entered the restaurant, because he was the only non-Asian person there, and the lady owner said "wait five minutes" to him, but in Chinese. The restaurant was half-full with middle-aged and old Chinese people, who seemed to be on familiar terms with the restaurant owners.

We ordered xiao longbao, or steamed pork buns, sweet rice dumplings with pork, and chicken with black bean sauce. Everything was tasty and authentic-tasting. Also, they served a little plate of cold celery and carrot slices mixed in sesame oil (or that's what it tasted like). We'd never had anything like the sweet rice dumplings with pork; imagine mochi ice cream, but with pork instead of ice cream, and hot instead of cold, and that's kind of what it tasted like!

The food was good, but the owners seemed much friendlier towards their regular customers, but that may also be because they didn't speak much English. Service was prompt, and the food tasty!
